Last weekend, while I was filming Humane Society Silicon Valley’s annual Walk ‘n Wag event, a KTVU Channel 2 News crew asked to interview me. It definitely caught me off guard as I am usually the one behind the camera! They asked me about our business and how the latest economic crisis has affected us. And sure enough, my sound bite was used for the 10 o’clock news. Check it out here.

Recently, we had the pleasure of working with Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Inc. We filmed him doing a lead-in for the trailer of our documentary, Cats Without a Home, which captures the plight of homeless cats in Santa Clara County. The documentary was produced by Humane Society Silicon Valley and they have done a wonderful job promoting the film. Homeless cats are a major issue in most urban areas and having individuals like Steve Wozniak highlight the issue really helps people take notice of animals in need. To view the trailer or order the DVD, please visit www.catswithoutahome.com.

A lot of people ask us what kind of videos we make, and when I tell them we create a lot of videos for nonprofit organizations, I don’t think they really understand what that means. One of the ways we’ve been able to use our skills as documentary filmmakers is to work with nonprofits and tell their organization’s story through the words of their clients. What this basically means is that we get to meet the people whose lives have been affected by different organizations and hear their success stories. And this truly is the BEST part about our job!

We hear stories of kids who struggled in the foster care system or who were homeless, and now are in college, following their hopes and dreams. We meet women who were in abusive relationships but are now safe and living their lives in confidence and without fear. We even meet neglected animals who were found in horrible conditions but are now healthy and living in loving homes. And all of these success stories are attributed to the phenomenal work that our nonprofits are doing.

It’s definitely rewarding work! We are able to create moving videos that touch the hearts of the viewers and at the same time help nonprofits gain financial support for their organizations so they can continue to help our community. And for us, when we walk away from each interview, we feel honored that these people have opened up and shared their stories with us. It’s awesome.

It’s not everyday we get to work along side youth. However, we recently had the opportunity to produce a series of public service announcements for Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV), where we worked directly with teen volunteers. This group of students is part of HSSV’s Youth Advisory Board (YAB). Members of the YAB are able to foster leadership skills, develop youth centric programs at HSSV, and actively participate in their love for animals.

The teens helped us with all aspects of production, including script development, acting, logging timecode, and making sure everyone knew their lines. We were very impressed with their professionalism and enthusiasm throughout the whole process. These kids stepped up to the plate and did a great job. You can learn more about the YAB and see their videos here.
